Every season, several golfers arrive here having been sold offset irons as a cure for a ball that starts right and keeps going. Some of them got better. Most did not, and a few got noticeably worse. The reason all three outcomes happen is worth twenty minutes of anybody's time.
What offset does not do
Offset does not rotate the face. A head with a quarter inch of offset and a head with none, if both are soled at the same lie with square faces, present exactly the same face angle to the target. Nothing about the geometry closes anything.
What offset does is move the face rearward relative to the shaft. Two real consequences follow from that, and they are frequently confused with a face-angle change.
The first is a very small increase in the time available between the shaft passing the ball position and the face arriving. Small enough that its direct mechanical effect is close to negligible for most swings.
The second is that the club looks different at address, and that is the one that matters.
What offset does do
A golfer who sees a face set back behind the shaft receives a visual cue that reads, roughly, as the club being slightly closed and slightly behind the hands. Different golfers respond to that cue in different ways, which is exactly why offset works brilliantly for some people and backfires for others.
The most common response is a small reduction in the amount the hands lead the clubhead through impact. That does have a real mechanical effect: less shaft lean means more effective loft, a higher launch, and a face that has more opportunity to square up. For a golfer whose slice comes from an open face at impact, that combination genuinely helps.
The second most common response is the opposite. A golfer who finds the setback picture uncomfortable pushes the hands further forward to correct it, de-lofting the club and steepening the delivery. Their slice usually gets worse, because a steeper delivery with a de-lofted face produces more of exactly what they were trying to escape.
The same head, given to two golfers with the same slice, can fix one and worsen the other. That is not a flaw in the head. It is a fitting problem being treated as a product problem.
Start line is a separate question
Where a golf ball starts is governed overwhelmingly by face angle at impact, with path contributing a much smaller share. This is true regardless of what the club looked like at address, and it is the reason start line cannot be fitted directly.
What can be fitted is the address picture that produces the delivery that produces the face angle. That is a three-step chain, and each step has to be measured rather than assumed.

Read that table honestly and it becomes clear why start line promises are worth so little. A fitter can change the first and third rows. The second row belongs to the golfer, and the fourth is a consequence rather than a setting.
How we test it instead
Rather than asking a golfer whether they like the look of a head — a question that produces an answer with no predictive value — we set up three heads with meaningfully different progression figures and run a short census on each.
The measurements that matter are strike height on the face, divot position relative to the ball, and the consistency of both. A head that suits the golfer produces a tighter vertical pattern and a divot that starts consistently at or just past the ball. A head that does not produces scatter, and it does so within eight or nine swings.
Golfers are frequently surprised by which head wins. Preference at address and performance across a census agree considerably less than half the time in our experience, and where they disagree we go with the census and explain why.
The practical summary
If you slice and the ball starts left of target before curving right, your face is closing relative to a badly out-to-in path, and offset will not help you. That is a path problem and it belongs to a coach.
If you slice and the ball starts right of target and curves further right, your face is open at impact, and a head with more offset may help — provided you do not respond to it by shoving your hands forward. A census tells you which of those you are within ten minutes.
And if your pattern is already tight, leave the whole subject alone. Changing progression to solve a problem you do not have is one of the more reliable ways to make a working set of irons stop working.
