The Club Asked To Work From Lies It Was Never Shaped For

A driver gets a tee. An iron gets a divot. A fairway wood is expected to sweep cleanly off whatever it finds, which is why its sole matters more than its loft.

Question Three

What The Sole Does In The First Two Inches

Fairway wood contact is decided in a very short window. The sole either glides into the turf and lets the face reach the ball, or it catches early and everything after that is damage control.

Three properties govern that window. Sole width spreads the load and resists digging. Camber, the front-to-back curve of the sole, decides how gently the club transitions from touching grass to travelling through it. Leading-edge height sets how much margin there is before the edge digs in rather than sliding.

None of the three appears on a marketing sheet in useful form, and none of them can be judged by looking at the club in a rack. They can be judged in five swings off a tight lie, which is why we build that lie into the session instead of testing everything off a soft mat.

A wood that scores well on the first two and falls apart on the third is exactly the club most golfers end up owning, because the third is the one no retail demo day ever sets up.

Loft Comes Later

Why We Argue About The 3-Wood Last

Most fairway wood conversations start with the number stamped on the sole. Ours ends there, because loft is only meaningful once the club is reliably reaching the ball.

Case 01

The 3-wood that never leaves the tee

If a 15° head only works from a tee peg, it is a second driver rather than a fairway wood. Plenty of golfers are better served by a stronger-lofted 5-wood with a friendlier sole and no pride attached to the number.

Case 02

The gap that is really a length problem

A wood built an inch shorter frequently gains carry, because centre contact returns. We test length before we test a different head for exactly this reason.

The wood a hybrid should replace

Sometimes the honest answer is that this slot belongs on the hybrid bench. We say so, credit the session fee, and move next door.

Shaft Work

Heavier Than The Driver, Almost Always

A fairway wood shaft that matches the driver in weight tends to produce a club that is too easy to swing hard and too hard to control through turf. Ten to twenty grams up from the driver is the usual landing spot here.

The extra mass steadies the low point, which is the whole game from a tight lie. It also narrows the effective strike pattern on a face that is considerably less forgiving than a driver's, and on a shallow head that difference shows up in ball speed retention immediately.

Length follows the same logic. Standard fairway wood length has crept up alongside driver length and the shot demanded of the club has not changed at all. Half an inch shorter is a common recommendation and rarely costs carry once contact tightens.

Local Conditions

Wet May, Firm August, Same Golf Club

Southern Wisconsin fairways change character across a season more than the average bag can accommodate without a little planning.

A wide-soled wood that floats beautifully across soft May turf can bounce off firm August ground and catch the ball thin. A narrow sole tuned for August will dig in spring. The fitting decision is not which end to optimise for — it is how much of both ends a single sole geometry can cover.

Usually the answer is more than golfers expect, provided length and shaft weight are right. Where it genuinely is not, we say so and the card notes which condition the build favours.
