The first week of May on a parkland course in Dane County, the ground is still giving up winter water and the fairway takes a footprint. The second week of August on the same fairway, a well-struck iron leaves a scuff rather than a divot. These are not variations on a theme. They are two different problems, and the club has to solve both.
What soft ground does to a golf club
On firm turf, a sole skims. The club contacts the ground, slides, and exits, and the amount of energy lost to the interaction is small. Contact is largely a face-and-ball event.
On soft ground, the sole sinks before it slides. Instead of skimming across the surface, the club has to move through material, and how much material it moves depends on the width and shape of the sole doing the moving. That resistance costs speed, and it costs it after impact has begun rather than before, which is why the shot comes out short rather than mishit.
Worse, the resistance is not consistent. Soft ground varies enormously across a single fairway and across a single morning as the sun works on it. A club that is marginal in those conditions produces a genuinely unpredictable result, which is far more damaging to scoring than one that is merely a little short.
The three specifications that matter
Sole width. A wider sole spreads the load and resists sinking. This is the single most useful property in soft conditions, and it is the reason a game-improvement iron genuinely does play easier in a wet spring regardless of anything else about it.
Leading edge height. How far the leading edge sits above the ground when the club is soled. A low edge digs into soft ground readily; a slightly raised one skips into contact instead. Fairway woods vary hugely here and it is rarely published.
Shaft mass. The unexpected one. A heavier shaft steadies the low point, and low-point control is what governs how much turf you take in the first place. Golfers fitted with light shafts often find their spring golf noticeably worse than their summer golf, and the shaft is the reason.
Most of what golfers describe as a bad spring is a bag built entirely around August conditions.

The fairway wood row deserves attention. It is the club most often asked to work from ground it was never shaped for, and it is the club golfers most often blame themselves for. A 3-wood that produces good shots in July and nothing in May is very frequently a leading-edge height problem rather than a technique one.
How we fit for both ends
The approach is to build a bag whose window covers both conditions adequately rather than optimising for either. In practice that means three habits.
First, gapping is set from cool-air carry rather than summer carry. A ladder built on July numbers has holes in it by late September, and a ladder built on October numbers simply plays a little short in the heat, which is a far more forgiving failure.
Second, sole width sits toward the generous end of what a golfer will accept visually. There is usually more headroom here than golfers expect, particularly in the long irons where nobody is admiring the club anyway.
Third, shaft mass sits slightly heavier than a pure speed-optimised choice would suggest. The cost is a fraction of a mile per hour on the best strike. The benefit is a low point that stays where you put it in April.
The winter caveat
Fittings run between November and March cannot read turf. Everything else works indoors, but sole behaviour genuinely does not, and we would rather say so than pretend a mat is a fairway.
Winter cards carry a note that turf-dependent specifications are provisional, and those golfers get a spring review at no charge once there is real ground to work with. It is usually a thirty-minute appointment and it changes something perhaps half the time — most often one wedge grind, occasionally a fairway wood.
That review is not generosity. It is the only honest way to run a fitting studio in a state where the ground is frozen for a third of the year.
